In the dynamic world of legal marketing and business development, building a cohesive team is crucial. Whether your team operates in a traditional office or remotely, fostering unity and collaboration is key to achieving success. I recently had the privilege of attending the Marketing Leaders Roundtable (MLR200) in NYC with KHS People, where this topic was a major focus of discussion. The insights gained there have reinforced my belief in the importance of team building and the unique challenges faced by virtual teams.
Why Team Building Matters
A strong, unified team can drive innovation, enhance productivity, and create a supportive work environment. In legal marketing and business development, where collaboration and strategic thinking are paramount, team building is not just beneficial—it’s essential. A well-connected team can seamlessly share ideas, provide constructive feedback, and support one another in achieving common goals.
Uniting a Virtual Team
With the rise of remote work, many legal marketing and business development teams now operate virtually. While this offers flexibility and access to a wider talent pool, it also presents challenges in maintaining team cohesion. Here are some strategies to unite a virtual team:
Regular Communication: Establishing regular communication channels is crucial. Weekly video meetings, daily check-ins, and dedicated chat groups can help maintain a sense of connection and ensure everyone is on the same page.
Virtual Team Building Activities: Organize virtual team-building exercises, such as online games, virtual coffee breaks, virtual happy hours and team quizzes. These activities can foster camaraderie and help team members bond outside of work-related tasks.
Clear Goals and Roles: Clearly define team goals, roles, and responsibilities. When everyone knows what is expected of them and how their work contributes to the team’s success, it creates a sense of purpose and unity.
Recognition and Appreciation: Regularly recognize and appreciate team members’ efforts. Celebrating achievements and acknowledging hard work can boost morale and strengthen team bonds. Perhaps a weekly “Good News Call” where team members can highlight their wins and shout out gratitude for other team members.
Use Collaborative Tools: Leverage collaborative tools like project management software, shared documents, and virtual whiteboards. These tools can facilitate seamless collaboration and ensure that everyone has access to the information they need.
Challenges of Keeping a Remote Team Connected
Despite the best efforts, keeping a remote team connected can be challenging. Here are some common obstacles and possible solutions:

Storytelling: Use storytelling to highlight the team’s achievements, values, and goals. Sharing success stories and personal experiences can create a sense of belonging and motivate team members.
Feedback Loops: Establish regular feedback loops to encourage open communication. Providing a platform for team members to share their thoughts and suggestions can improve collaboration and address any issues promptly.

While remote work presents unique challenges, there are numerous strategies and solutions to foster a connected and cohesive team.
