Executive Search (Operations & Technology)
Placing Senior Operations and Technology Leadership for Maximum Impact
While KHS People has deep roots in Marketing & Business Development searches, over the years our work has naturally expanded to other senior business roles. One recent engagement highlights our approach to placing a highly senior and strategic Operations and Technology professional.
Our client, a newly appointed Chief Marketing & Business Development Officer (CMBDO) at their firm, needed to quickly establish a Director layer to support business functions that included both Operations and Technology. The firm faced multiple challenges: the team was undergoing significant leadership and cultural change, the Directors needed to stabilize and grow functions that had previously been underdeveloped, and there was a sense of urgency to bring in leaders who could hit the ground running while aligning with the CMBDO’s vision.
Our Approach
Through our long-standing relationships and deep market insight, we identified a candidate who had been on our radar for several years. This individual brought a rare combination of operational expertise, Marketing/Business Development (M/BD) technology experience, and former Chief Marketing Officer (CMO)-level leadership. While the firm was initially skeptical whether a former CMO could adapt to a senior Director role, we knew the candidate was quietly seeking a position with influence, but without first-chair executive responsibility.
We leveraged our intimate knowledge of both the candidate and the firm to guide both sides through the process. Our approach included:
- Conducting comprehensive briefings and debriefings for the candidate to prepare for interviews and navigate multiple stakeholders.
- Highlighting the candidate’s unique capacity to handle dual responsibilities across Operations and Technology, reducing the need for separate hires.
- Educating the firm’s leadership on the candidate’s skill set, experience, and potential to stabilize and enhance their team, while also guiding them to understand that not all candidates prioritize title above all else. We highlighted that this individual was focused on the right technical challenge, the opportunity to make a meaningful impact, and a cultural fit where their leadership style could thrive, rather than being hung up on a specific title.
- Maintaining close, ongoing communication with the CMBDO and C-level stakeholders to build trust, address concerns, and ensure alignment throughout the search.
Strategic Outcome
The candidate successfully assumed the dual Director role, immediately stabilizing a high-risk team and implementing processes that aligned Operations and Technology with the firm’s strategic objectives. Leveraging their prior C-level experience, they were able to navigate change, build consensus, and approach challenges with a calm, holistic leadership approach – qualities that have since made them a highly valued member of the Director peer group.
The CMBDO has noted the candidate’s strategic impact, emphasizing their ability to support both technical and people-focused aspects of the function. The candidate continues to thrive, bringing structure, clarity, and influence to a team experiencing rapid growth and change.
Our Perspective
This engagement highlights the value of long-term candidate relationships, deep market insight, and tailored guidance. By understanding both the firm’s needs and the candidate’s motivations, we were able to place a leader who did not “fit the conventional mold” but who provided maximum impact. It also underscores our belief that executive search is more than filling a role – it is about strategically matching talent with opportunity, ensuring long-term organizational success, and providing both candidates and clients with thoughtful, practical guidance.
